Well... it's that time of year again! I'm heading down off my mountain here in Colorado to head out to California & audition for Bellydance Superstars again next weekend. Male Bellydancers Community??

Ok so i was talking to Frank and we were disscussing the male bellydancers community and i asked him what he thought about it and this is what he had to say, which i think he hit it dead on!!!!!

As far as community goes, I think we have an ok 1, but it REALLY needs to be revamped. You have done a great job starting the Male Bellyander Tribe. Jim has done a great job starting the Men of Middle Eastern Dance Tribe.
I do my part to support the community by being active in the on-line forums, commenting on videos, spreading the word of male bellydancers (of ALL styles) in my travels, not charging local men to take my classes, & I teach other male bellydancers through on-line correspondance via YouTube, MySpace, Tribe & e-mail.

I just think that we all need to work together for a common goal... making our society aware that male bellydancers are an integral part of the dance & artistic communities. We are artists, we are hard workers, & we have & continue to achieve a lot within our own rights & as a whole.

So now i want to know what everyon else thinks on this subject as far as what we should do to make out community better???

We are seeking to put together details for our 2009 Men of Middle Eastern Dance event. We're hoping for the San Francisco Bay Area, preferable SF Proper.

The event would include:
- Showcase of Men dancing Middle Eastern dance styles
- Workshops featuring the

- Finding, securing a venue
- Coordinating videographers
- Local promotions
- Coordinating registrations possibly
- Working with scheduling of other local events

Details are flexible. We are hoping for a May or June event.

Bit of an Ego Boost

I've been dancing for about ten years now. And for about that time I've had the excrutiating/necessary experience of seeing myself perform on tape or dvd. I'm not too disappointed most of the time. In fact, as time has gone on, there are more and more moments and sequences of which I feel genuine pride.

Then, at Meryem Vani's showcase at the end of November, a set of circumstances happened. Couldn't get off work, so I had to show up pretty close to the end. Brought my costume in case they needed me to dance. They did. Or at least, Meryem allowed me to do a solo. <g> I'd hurriedly listened to some pieces that morning, looking for something that "felt" right. Something I could "fall into" and dance with, even without knowing the music well. And I'd chosen a particular arrangement of costume elements that was new--all black and sliver and lavender.

Five minutes. It felt great. The entrance was a little weak, but the rest felt very good indeed. A couple of days ago I finally got to see the dvd

And was floored. This was the best thing I think I've ever done. Not perfect, but pretty much the kind of thing I like to imagine I can do and given enough chances hopefully will do on a regular basis! Woo and hoo!

Just wanted to share that.

Jim Boz's Milwaukee Workshops and Show Only 12 Days Away!

Saturday, September 8, will feature a 5-hour long workshop in Oriental Technique and Choreography, and the Gala All-Professionals Show will be presented at 7pm, with an open party afterward. So why don't more men dance? I think it boils down, sadly, to a guy vs girl thing. Guys, as a rule, present company excepted of course, don't want to put themselves out there - be it fear ("lookit the eejit up there"), laziness (as I've been) or their interests being in other areas. From my side of the gender fence, in this society, it seems women have a greater freedom to express themselves, especially in dance.

To me, the idea of being in a troupe rather than soloing helps put the 'fear/exposure' concern to rest. There's strength - and relative safety - in numbers.

And about the "lack of coordination" concern I hear? I wouldn't presume to do some of the things my dear friend Bhrigha can (she of the butterfly belly), but I haven't seen anything in the PURE foundation choreography that's a showstopper. Time and effort should do the trick.

Hey guys! Frank here. I am very excited to announce that I'll be flying out to San Rafael, California this weekend to audition for the Bellydance Superstars & Desert Roses. On Saturday March 3rd I will be auditioning in the morning, Workshoping with Rachel Brice in the afternoon, & then going to see Raqs Carnavale in the evening. This is sure to be an amazingly fun day. If I can either get to a computer or get my wireless set-up on my new laptop, I will blog my experience here on good ol' Tribe. I'll be blogging about the audition process, workshop, show & talk about how I feel representing bellydance from the Tribal Fusion, Male, Colorado & my own personal perspective. I've been working hard on choosing audition music, choreographing, & costuming. The odds may be stacked against me with being so young, a new dancer, as well as a male, but I'm still determined & optimistic. As I embark on this journey, I hope that I may take your best wishes & postive energy with me.

Ive been thinking alot lately about what it might be like to dance in a restaurant setting, where everyone is having dinner, and then comes time for dancing for tips, with live music, the band can continue on for as long as it takes for your routine, but i was wondering how you all who dance in these types of settings gauge your canned music so that it doesnt end durring this part of the dance,

I mean like what makes you wear certain things, dance certain ways??? im so sick of Bellydancer ecspecially men saying oh that was just to feminine, I mean yes there are guys who are just a touch away form being a woman but so what??? if thats what they feel why not express it i mean isnt that what bellydance is about??? thats why i started. Like lately i have using lots of my Greek Heritage influence, because its the reason i started dancing or at least part of it. I dont know what i am even trying to say anymore. I guess just dance and dress the way you want and use the fucking music you want!!!!!!!!!!!

Airplanes and Coin Belts

2006 Men of Middle Eastern Dance Calendar Project

Okay, I talked it over with Prince Andrew and we *might* still try for it.
If you are interested in being part of the Men Of Middle Eastern Dance 2006 Calendar Project, we are still interested in getting something out, even at this late date.

The problems we are facing are:
1 - Lack of submissions: Too many people say 'yeah yeah yeah' and then are unable to get us an image.
2 - Poor images: Unless it's REALLY kool, pics of you dancing at the local coffee shop aren't the best source. Photo shoot!
3 - Capital/Profit: The project costs money and ultimately will not profit. It's an advertising tool to keep people aware of MEN involved in the dance, and some names associated. I don't have huge sums of money to throw at it. I'd like to recoup some of the funds I lost on other MoMED projects, eh?

I take the calendars with me to events around the country and offer them for raffle prizes, and try to sell a few. If you want to be part of the 2006 project, email calendar@menofmiddleeasterndance.com. I need:
- A high resolution image (NOT a web graphic)
- Bio
- Contact information that you want included
- Your release for the images for usage in the project

You receive:
- Availability of the calendars at cost.
- Advertising!
- Being a stronger consideration for the Men Of Middle Eastern Dance 2005 show that's been rescheduled for 12/16 & 17 and the 2006 Show scheduled for May in Santa Monica, CA.

Calling all male bellydancers in the Kansas City Metro area (and points beyond) to unite and put your best hip forward. The shindig is ON!

When: August 12, 2006
Where: 9100 England, Overland Park, KS 66212 (this is a residence)
Time: 2:00pm til the host tells everyone to go away

Why do this? Because we're men and real men do what they want to do - and we want to dance!

This is a gathering of male bellydancers in the KC Metro area to meet-n-greet other like minded gentlemen. We're out there..now let's gather and tell tales, dance dances, drink drinks, and generally have a great time revelling in the fact that "We are not alone."

While this is mainly a celebration that there are male dancers in our area, we welcome any and all who wish to show up to our little hafla.
We hope to have live drumming courtesy of Ainmere and Gibbous Moon.
We are holding this in conjunction with a gathering sponsored by Phoibe Korinthia who is holding a BodyShop/Henna party the same day/location. She's doing this as a convenience for dancers to pamper themselves and prepare for performance at the KC Ethnic Enrichment Festival the following weekend.

We'll provide the steaks, the grill and the room to strut your stuff.
You bring a dish to share and whatever you want to drink. (This is not a dry site, but the host has requested that you not give her two small girls alcohol or get them drunk from your breath)

Crash space can be made available after the hafla on-site or at my domus nearby for those that choose to imbibe. You drinkie...you no drivie!

So come and join the fun of mixing testosterone with estrogen and see just what kind of explosion we can make.

2007 MoMED Calendar Project

As a project, I created the Men of Middle Eastern Dance events and merchandising
to increase awareness and celebrate professionals in our industry. Part of the
project includes the MEN of Middle Eastern Dance Calendar, an admittedly
tongue-in-cheek expression based on marketing ourselves to the dance community
at large. Our first calendar was offered in 2004 and featured several
professionals in our industry. I hope to re-introduce the project for 2007.

This is a grass-roots based promotional scheme. With little capital investment,
we have little risk based on our current methods of production. However, with
the excitement and novelty generated with the concept, as individual
instructors and performers, we have been able to access previously untapped
markets for our instruction and performances, educate dancers and non-dancers
of our existence and contribution, and keep our fans excited.

As a professional in our industry, I know you are aware of the value of
marketing appropriate to your image, style and level of expertise. I have, in
the past, included many of us seeking marketing opportunities merely to
increase our exposure. I would be seriously remiss in inviting those whose
instruction, dedication, history, abilities and work have paved the way for the

I was wondering if the Calendar is out for sale yet..this waiting is drivin me crazy..LOL.. Also we, we need more Male Belly Dance shows here on the East Coast, and not always in NYC... Boston would be nice Perhaps get Omar to dance at a show.
Has anyone ever seen him dance, i know he dances in Philli quite a bit, was wondering if anyone has seen him. She expressed an interest in getting more people to participate in making journal entries for the research. I told her I would ask the groups I am a part of online if they would like to participate in this and she agreed that would be a good idea.

Phantomime Productions

This summer I will be touring as the Phantomime with a mobile performance stage complete with rigging, a portable stage, lighting installation and as well an Egyptian tent and alter installation honoring Baste. I am inviting performers and lighting people to join me at different venues to use the stage, and add to out lighting effects. In addition to performing and teaching I am hoping to meet up with various Gypsies and to exchange knowledge. Each Showbelisk has e a black lacquer and ornamental finish that makes the installation stand on it’s own during the day. The instillation will be be self-powered where necessary. It’s like a psychadelic Stone circle.

The stage is designed for Fire performances, but can function well for small theatre/dance/music acts. The area of the stage is 8X24 and sits seven feet off the ground and is rigged with fireproof materials and extinguishers, projection screens, sound and a generator.

Temple of Baste/Healing and recovery station. The temple of Baste is a large open sun tent with Egyptian murals painted on its sides. A special wind resistant fabric allows for air to pass through but little sun. This allows the enclosure to remain comfortable in high temperatures
The alter bares a large bronze Cat and a series of talismans and mirrors; the tent will house a series ointments and a foot cleansing station for the conjured and weary. Priests and priestesses will, at times, be on hand to care and wash feet without charge. The tent offers space for body workers to set up as long as there is no monetary exchange.

BDSS Live in Denver

Holy Crap! Last night I saw the Bellydance Superstars & Desert Roses in the Raqs Carnivale in Denver. It was amazing. Before the show I did a Tribal Fusion workshop with Cami Liddle & she wore my ass out! I got to meet Mr. Miles Copeland & Petite Jamila before the workshop! During the workshop, Bellydance Superstars Moria & Sonia, & and Desert Rose Colleen Anderson danced with us for a warm-up! I was really suprised to see that I nobody recognized them out of their make-up & costumes! For the concert I sat front-row-center & was able to smell Jilina's perfume! After the show, I was able to get pictures with Bellydance Superstars Sonia, Cami Liddle, Adore, Moria, & Sharon Kihara, Desert Rose Colleen Anderson, & Mr. Miles Copeland! Sharon Kihara is sooo tall! I'm 6' 3" & Sharon Kihara was about 3" shorter than I was in her barefeet! The entire show was stunning & amazing! I definitely recommend that you see the show when it comes to a city near you if you haven't seen it already! -----Frank "Hammerhead Sharqi"

Hiya....I'm working on a paper about men and bellydance (it's for my dance, gender, and culture course), so I'm hoping to get some feedback from you all....

How did you get started bellydancing? How do you feel about dancing in a predominantly female art form? Have you ever gotten any interesting comments, looks, etc. by bellydancing?

Are there differences in the way men do some of the movements? Costuming differences? Anything else?

I'm basically just grasping for something.....and if anyone knows of video clips of male dancers online, that would be stellar....
